The Faculty of Dentistry of the Univeristy of Hong Kong (HKU) hosted an Open Day on November 21 (Sunday) to showcase its activities, services, programmes, and facilities. More than 200 citizens attended the day's activities.
The Faculty of Detnistry held the open day from 10 am to 2 pm at the Prince Philip Dental Hospital, 34 Hospital Road, Sai Ying Pun. Visitors were led by students to tour facilities such as the problem-based learning suites, simulation laboratory, Centre for Advance Dental care, library, postgraduate habitats as well as dental and research laboratories.
Most citizens were impressed by the Centre for Advanced Dental Care which is installed with the state-of-the-art equipments like the computer navigational surgery system, and the real-time implant teeth making and restoration system, imported from places including Sweden, United States, Switzerland and Germany. The CEREC 3D system demonstrated to the public is used for dental restoration, such as producing dentures and crowns. It can scan the entire intra-oral quickly and can photograph a single tooth or entire teeth, complete the entire dental arch with digital impression, and immediate milling of the dentures. With this system, impression material and production of impression are no longer necessary. This not only helps to avoid deformation and error in traditional impression and formwork, but also to save time of dentists and patients. In the past, patients were required to visit the clinic at least twice to complete the treatment. Now, the treatment can be finished within two hours.
In addition, students and parents interested in the undergraduate programme were briefed by faculty members on the Problem-based Learning (PBL) implemented since 1998. This student-centred, open-discovery mode of learning does away with traditional lectures and helps students explore real-life situations while learning how to learn, as well as how to communicate and cooperate with each other. PBL helps students become well-rounded caring dentists who are critical thinkers and life-long learners.
