"Talking Liberal Studies with Parents" by Dr Cheung Chi Kim
The Faculty of Education, in support of the University's drive to strengthen knowledge exchange, one of the three strategic themes of the University's Strategic Development, takes the initiative in knowledge sharing with the public by organizing a series of education seminars for parents. The first two seminars "Talking Mathematics with Parents" and "Talking English with Parents" held in May and June respectively received enthusiastic response. Our Faculty will be organizing the third seminar "Talking Liberal Studies with Parents - What should I know and do about my child's Liberal Studies education?" The seminar will examine the topics in Liberal Studies taught in schools nowadays and the focus will be on the role parents are playing in the rapid changing teaching and learning environment.
At the seminar, the following issues will be discussed:
- How to communicate well with our children who are born in the era of Liberal Studies?
- Is Liberal Studies just chit-chatting?
- The balance between learning in general or in depth
- The difficulties of studying Liberal Studies
- The opportunities and challenges for Liberal Studies education
- Can Liberal Studies contribute to help improve Hong Kong's society?
Dr Cheung is honourary Assistant Professor in the Division of Policy, Administration and Social Sciences Education in the Faculty of Education, the University of Hong Kong. Being the associate programme director of the Bachelor of Education (Liberal Studies) programme, Dr Cheung has been teaching Liberal Studies for the Master's degree, Bachelor's degrees and postgraduate diploma, as well as In-service Teacher Education Programme for many years. The research interests of Dr Cheung include Liberal Studies, Media Education and Business Education and his research received support from the General Research Fund. He is currently working for UNESCO in developing the course materials about "Conduct Teacher Training for Educators in the Whole World".
