William Mong Distinguished Lecture: Internet-Scale Data Distribution: Some Research Problems
The increasing growth of the Internet, the Web and mobile environments have had a push-pull effect. On the one hand, these developments have increased the variety and scale of distributed applications. The data management requirements of these applications are considerably different from those applications for which most of the existing distributed data management technology was developed. On the other hand, they represent significant changes in the underlying technologies on which these systems are built. There has been considerable attention to this issue in the last decade and there is important progress on a number of fronts. However, there are remaining issues that require attention. In this talk, Professor Özsu will review some of the developments, some areas in which there has been progress, and highlight some of the issues that still require attention.

Economic and Social Rights: The Role of Courts in China
Compared to the average lower-middle income country, China has done relatively well on most social and economic indicators. Chinese courts however have generally played a limited, and rather ineffectual, role in implementing economic and social rights (ESR). The UN Committee for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights has strongly urged China to make greater use of the courts in implementing ESR. In this lecture, Professor Randall Peerenboom, Professor of Law, La Trobe University will consider what the role of the courts could and should be in implementing ESR in China.
