"Understanding our Young Generation”
03 Jan 2011
About the same time last year, youth protests against the construction of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong express rail link have raised widespread attention and concern in our community. The media has adopted various terms such as the "post-80s", "the 4th generation" and "generation Y" for this young generation.
Commissioned by the Central Policy Unit (CPU) of the HKSAR government, Department of Social Work and Social Administration, Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) has undergone an eight month investigation to expand our understanding using various research approaches to assess and demystify more about this generation's aspirations, needs, views, and frustrations. More ambitiously, we examined a broader scope of concerns from various marco-level perspectives -- for example, the social, economic, cultural, and political forces underlying recent youth behaviour. In addition, the micro-level understanding of some individuals' experiences can help confirm and extend this broad picture.
