Professor Anne Watson - CANOTTA Distinguished Visiting Fellow in Faculty of Education, HKU
20 Jan 2011
Knowledge exchange is one of the core commitments of the Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong. It is realized by our engagement in multiple partnerships with professionals and community both locally and internationally. One of the initiatives is marked by the visit of Professor Anne Watson, Professor of Mathematics Education, University of Oxford, under the scheme of CANOTTA Distinguished Visiting Fellowship in Mathematics Education 2011.
How can we teach classes of diverse learners the core ideas of mathematics? This is a question that has puzzled teachers for decades and various solutions have been proposed. In the lecture, the nature of diversity in prior knowledge, ways of seeing mathematics, and choices about ways to work will first be explored and see how this affects our responses to tasks. Then, how teaching can be designed to take account of these differences, but yet enable all students to engage with mathematics will be discussed. By the end, a stronger understanding of how task design and pedagogy interact to enable all to learn mathematical ideas will be developed.
Media representatives are cordially invited to the lecture, the details are as follows:
Date: January 22, 2011 (Saturday)
Time: 10:30 am - 12:00 noon
Venue: LG06, Hui Oi Chow Science Building, The University of Hong Kong
