HKU “Service 100” Kickoff: Over 500 primary school students are on their way to HKU
12 Mar 2011
Over 500 students from Primary Four to Six and various background including grassroots and ethnic minorities, experienced HKU life today (March 12), and celebrated the University's Centenary with HKU students, staff and alumni.
The students were joined by over 150 HKU students, staff and alumni who were volunteer tutors. The students were divided into two groups. About 300 of them joined the morning session and the rest in the afternoon. They attended tutorials, such as, foreign language classes, music and lacrosse demonstrations which were organised by HKU students. The tutors also shared their HKU stories with the students during the campus tour. They most exciting part was a mini High Table at Loke Yew Hall where HKU Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Roland Chin conducted a lecture on "Internet".
The event entitled "On my way to HKU" seeks to cultivate in the primary students a positive attitude towards learning and acquiring knowledge, and to aspire them to becoming university students. No student should be deprived of the right to pursue knowledge because of financial ability and background. HKU advocates equal learning opportunities for all young people and has introduced various programmes, including the "First-in-the-Family Education Fund" (http://www.fife.hku.hk/). The FIFE Education Fund has been established to help those in need to actively take part in experiential learning activities. At present, half of the University's first-year students are from low-income families with monthly family income below $20,000, 19% with monthly family income less than $10,000. This belief in equal learning opportunities regardless of one's background is to be shared with the community as a whole.
HKU "Service 100" has been launched with an aim to reaffirm the University's commitment to build a better world. HKU community members will be mobilized locally as well as across the globe to engage in hundreds of community service projects worldwide. The students of the University have long been actively engaging in social services. Half of them have taken part in services of various kinds in different parts of the world during the school year.
