Lunch with a Laureate - Professor Kurt Wüthrich, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry
A group of 20 senior secondary school students and science undergraduates will meet Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Professor Kurt Wüthrich for "Lunch with a Laureate". Professor Kurt Wüthrich answered the question "What does protein look like?" by developing nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy for studying protein. This revolutionary breakthrough allows researchers to analyzing proteins in detail, which is not only helpful for new pharmaceuticals development but also allows early diagnose of some dangerous diseases, such as cancer. In 1996, mad cow disease broke out in Britain. Within 10 days of the outbreak, Professor Kurt Wüthrich analyzed the three-dimension structure of the prion protein which involved in the development of mad cow disease. Besides, by making use of some of the NMR properties, the Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique is also developed and it is now commonly used in clinical diagnose.

Faculty of Law talk "To Achieve Justice in the Mainland China, "Trick or Treat"
by Dr. Liu Nanping, Founding Partner, Liu & Wang, Attorneys at Law (PRC)
Unlike the counterpart in the West, it seems there is not much confidence in the Mainland judicial system because of its non-independence and reported corruption. However, it does not mean that justice cannot be achieved. Dr Liu Nanping wrote an article entitled "Trick or Treat: Legal Reasoning in the Shadow of Corruption in the PRC," which was published in 2009. During the talk, Dr Liu will share some real cases, and will identify and discuss the skills and techniques involved in the following three phrases of legal proceedings:
- Before the Case Filing: To Understand the Parties in the Lawsuit
- During the Trial: What we can do?
- After the Final Judgment: What Extra Techniques?
