Send-off Ceremony for Service 100 Summer Programmes
23 May 2011
Over 100 HKU student volunteers pledged to serve the community at the Send-off Ceremony for Service 100 Summer Programmes today.
Service is a core value of the University of Hong Kong. HKU has a long tradition of contributing to the community. As one of the main themes of HKU centennial celebrations, HKU "Service 100" has been launched with an aim to reaffirm the University's commitment to build a better world. Under Service 100, HKU students will continue to take up initiatives and engage in service activities for the improvement of the human conditions. This summer, over 300 students will organise and participate in a wide range of service activities to eradicate poverty, combat HIV/AIDS, promote gender equality, ensure environmental sustainability, advocate social harmony and world peace, locally as well as across the globe. At the Ceremony, students introduced their projects. Besides serving Hong Kong, a lot of them will be setting off to over 20 destinations around the world, including Ghana in Africa, Chile in Latin America, Thailand, Indonesia and Sri Lanka in Asia to build emergency houses, construct bridge and latrines, teach transferable employment skills, and install flooding protection devices, etc. As Professor Tsui remarked, "No matter local or abroad, their (your) actions will result in a prolonged and sustainable impact on the people and community".
Besides making the service pledges, Prof. Tsui commissioned the student volunteers by presenting a HKU Service Pack to them. The pack contains items such as towel, cap and water bottle to facilitate and protect HKU students along their service journey. This Send-off Ceremony marked one of the initiatives of HKU in further consolidating itself as an active learning community to SERVE.
