HKU students help promote the recovery of the Japanese tourism industry
Thirteen student members of the University of Hong Kong's Japanese Society, A.A.H.K.U.S.U., paid a five-day visit to Japan from May 24 to 28 as part of an initiative to support the country's tourism industry following the deadly March 11 earthquake and tsunami. During their stay in Japan, the students visited Keio University in Tokyo, as well as various places of interest in Hokkaido, in a bid to encourage visitors to return to areas that, although distant from those impacted by the disaster, have seen tourist numbers plummet.
Media representatives are cordially invited to attend a post-trip briefing with three student participants, including Ms. Echo Chan, Chairperson of the Japanese Society, as well as HKU Associate Professor in Japanese Studies Dr. Yoshiko Nakano and All Nippon Airways staff member Ms. Willa To. The students will share their experiences and give an account of their exchanges with Japanese students.
Date: May 30, 2011 (Monday)

Distinguished Lecture by Prof Maurice Galton - Why Won't Teachers Change the Way They Teach?
Many authorities, worldwide, are urging teachers to do less talking thereby giving pupils more opportunities to discuss amongst themselves and to engage in more active forms of learning. In Hong Kong, the incentive for these reforms at primary level has been to reduce class size. But change is slow to come. Teaching has been labelled "one of the most conservative of all professions." In this lecture, Professor Maurice Galton will examine some of the reasons offered for teachers' apparent reluctance to change their classroom practice and put forward possible solutions to this seemingly intractable problem.

Book Launch - Troubling American Women
Troubling American Women: Narratives of Gender and Nation in Hong Kong by Stacilee Ford
American women have lived in Hong Kong, and in neighboring Macao, for nearly two centuries. Many were changed by their encounter with Chinese life and British colonialism. Their openness to new experiences set them apart both individually and as a group. Equally, a certain "pedagogical impulse" gave them a reputation for outspokenness that sometimes troubled those around them. Drawing on memoirs, diaries, newspapers, film, and other texts, Stacilee Ford tells the stories of several American women and explores how, through dramatically changing times, they communicated their notions of national identity and gender. Troubling American Women is a lively and provocative study of cross-cultural encounters, shedding light on the connections between the histories of Hong Kong and the US, on the impact of Americanization in Hong Kong, and on the ways in which Hong Kong people used stereotypes of American womanhood in popular culture.
