Invitation to Free Workshop for Journalists on Environmental Issues
31 May 2011
Organised by The Kadoorie Institute, HKU
&
Funded by The Hongkong Bank Foundation
The Kadoorie Institute of The University of Hong Kong will launch the "Global Forest Observatory: Public Involvement and Training in Scientific Research in Hong Kong" project (the Project) in June 2011. Funded by the Hongkong Bank Foundation, it is a 3-year project comprising two key elements:
• To establish a 20 ha observatory forest plot in Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve. It is Hong Kong's FIRST research attempt to investigate the impacts of climate change on forests dynamics. It is also Hong Kong's FIRST and currently the ONLYForest Dynamic Plot in the international research programme initiated by the Center for Tropical Forest Science, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute of Harvard University; and
• To establish a 1 ha demonstration plot in Shek Kong for public education purpose. A key objective of the training programme is to nurture ordinary citizens to become " Professional Volunteers " in scientific research.
As one of the activities celebrating the launching of the Project, the organizer will arrange a complimentary training workshop tailor-made for journalists. The workshop is organized with the view that contemporary environmental issues are getting more complicated and technical to be articulated to the public at large and we hope that the workshop can equip the journalists with the latest and important understandings on environmental conservation.
