"Global Forest Observatory: Public Involvement and Training in Scientific Research in Hong Kong" Launching Ceremony
The Kadoorie Institute of The University of Hong Kong will officially launch the "Global Forest Observatory: Public Involvement and Training in Scientific Research in Hong Kong" project (the Project) on 25th June 2011 (Saturday). The Project has the below dual objectives:
- To establish a 20 ha observatory forest plot in Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve. It is Hong Kong's FIRST research attempt to investigate long-term forest dynamics, especially under the influence of global climate change. It is also Hong Kong's FIRST and currently the ONLY Forest Dynamic Plot to join 41 other forests in the international research network co-ordinated by the Center for Tropical Forest Science of Harvard University and the Smithsonian Institution;
- To establish a 1 ha demonstration plot in Shek Kong to provide training opportunity for the public to engage in the research.
The Project signifies a collective effort between various stakeholders in the community: Hongkong Bank Foundation to provide financial support for the first 3 years; The University of Hong Kong through The Kadoorie Institute to provide research and public education platform; The Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden as a voluntary NGO to provide additional expertise on forest science research for the first 3 years and manage and fund for the Project from the fourth year onwards; and the HKSARG through the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department to approve the research site at Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve.

"Critical Resource: The Economics of the Internet Addressing-Routing Space" Lunch Talk
by Professor Milton Mueller, Professor, School of Information Studies, Syracuse University, USA
Address space exhaustion is one of the most serious and immediate problems that the Internet faces today. Internet addressing and routing are often treated as technical subjects that are difficult to understand for laymen. Their discussion is couched in terms that are not always apparently economic in nature. But these technical discourses, laden with acronyms, are deeply economic in nature. They embrace the most difficult subject matters in economics - situations where markets are alleged to have failed to function efficiently and therefore fairly. They are the issues of managing scarcity, handling externalities and switching costs, overcoming the failures of common pool resources, avoiding a tragedy of the commons, and negotiating conflicts over the distribution of costs. The internet is often seen as the Wild West, where there are no rules and regulations, a place before the emergence of civilization and civil society, a place without governance, like the Hobbesian state of nature. Interestingly to address these problems the Internet has evolved governance institutions native to the Internet to provide workable solutions. Addressing and routing is a central issue in Internet governance.
Professor Milton Mueller of Syracuse University returns to Hong Kong to discuss these issues and their relevance to the industry and to Hong Kong in terms that can be understood by non-technical experts.

Conference on "Chinese Capital: History and Documents" 「華商資本:歷史和文獻」
Bringing together modern historians from different parts of the world such as Australia, mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and US, this conference will focus on different important issues of Chinese business and capital from the late 19th century up to the 1980s. By doing so, we hope to shed new light on the ongoing debate on the nature and function of Chinese capital. A better understanding of the concepts and characteristics that define the Chinese business networks, entrepreneurship, family business, and the impact of westernisation on Chinese accounting, commercial law and finance, will help us analyse how they interacted with each other.
Coinciding the conference there will be an exhibition on "Hong Kong Chinese Business: History and Documents" jointly organised with the HKU Libraries' Special Collections during 20 June-11 July 2011 at the HKU Main Library.
Date: July 2, 2011 (Saturday)
