Conference on "Chinese Capital: History and Documents"
Bringing together modern historians from different parts of the world such as Australia, mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and US, this conference will focus on different important issues of Chinese business and capital from the late 19th century up to the 1980s. By doing so, we hope to shed new light on the ongoing debate on the nature and function of Chinese capital. A better understanding of the concepts and characteristics that define the Chinese business networks, entrepreneurship, family business, and the impact of westernisation on Chinese accounting, commercial law and finance, will help us analyse how they interacted with each other.
Coinciding the conference there will be an exhibition on "Hong Kong Chinese Business: History and Documents" jointly organised with the HKU Libraries' Special Collections during 20 June-11 July 2011 at the HKU Main Library.
Date: July 2, 2011 (Saturday)
Time: 9am - 6pm
Venue: Lecture Hall, Hong Kong Museum of History, 100 Chatham Road South, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon
Language: Cantonese & Putonghua

Sponsored by the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), the forecasting project is managed and prepared by the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) Study Centre of the Hong Kong Institute of Economics and Business Strategy. It provides the community with reliable, transparent and useful forward-looking economic information to gauge the movements and effects of Hong Kong's activities on a quarterly basis.
The forecasting system has proved to be very useful in tracking the short-term fluctuations of the economy, particularly in predicting turning points of the business cycles.

Public Forum on Back to Learning
The Strategic Research Theme (SRT) on the Sciences of Learning and the Centre for Information Technology in Education (CITE) under the Faculty of Education will be co-organizing the Public Forum Back to Learning on July 5, 2011.
Although education reform is at the top of every nation's agenda, often the basic rationale behind the reform is not clear. In some cases, they are piecemeal reforms. This begs a fundamental question: What is the core focus of education? What should be central to education reform? Answers to these questions converge to one element: Learning! The core focus of education should be student learning. This would involve at least two major dimensions. One, what should students learn? Two, how should students learn?
Top researchers on learning and global policy leaders will meet in Hong Kong. They would like to share with educators and the general public their ideas and recommendations. The theme is how to restore learning as the core education policy concern, and to make sure fore-running research results on learning will inform policy-making and make impact on education.
