HKU receives letter of appreciation from the Japanese government for efforts in earthquake relief
14 Jul 2011
The Japanese Consul General Mr. Yuji KUMAMARU presented a letter of appreciation to Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) today (July 14) to express the Japanese government's gratitude for the University's efforts in the relief work after the earthquake.
A series of activities have been held by the HKU community in support of the victims of Japan's devastating earthquake and tsunami in March and the reconstruction of the devastated areas. They include the raising of HKD 70,211.74 on campus by the Faculty of Arts, the Japanese Society, A.A.H.K.U.S.U., and Japanese students at HKU. All donations have been sent to the Hong Kong Red Cross' Japanese earthquake appeal in early April. A trip was made in May by 13 students of the Japanese Society to Hokkaido and Tokyo as part of an initiative to support the country's tourism industry. They have shared their experience during the trip at: www.ana.co.jp/wws/hk/e/local/ana_info/notice110630/). Several concerts were organized by HKU students to raise fund for the relief work.
