The University of Hong Kong Centenary ‘Dunhuang Culture and Preservation Study Series’ Kick-off Ceremony
03 Sep 2011
Since its establishment 100 years ago, one of the missions of The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is to develop leaders for Hong Kong, China and the world. In the celebration of the 100th anniversary of HKU, we are proud to present the ‘Dunhuang Culture and Preservation Study Series'. Through an in-depth study of the rich history and artistic value of Dunhuang, students will gain a better understanding of the ancient Chinese wisdom and cultural exchange between the east and the west. The rise and fall of Dunhuang will also give students insights to contemplate on the future of Hong Kong and China and how they may contribute to the future development of Hong Kong and China.
Organized by the General Education Unit and sponsored by the Bank of China (HK) Charitable Foundation, the ‘Dunhuang Culture and Preservation Study Series' consists of two public lectures, a student conference and a study tour to the historic grottoes of Dunhuang by 30 HKU students. The activities will be held between October and November 2011. Well-known scholars and experts, including Prof. Ho Puay Peng (Director and Professor, School of Architecture, The Chinese University of Hong Kong), Ms. Lee Mei Yin (Visiting Research Fellow, Dunhuang Academy), Ms. Cheung Shin Yee (Writer and Project Co-ordinator of The Complete Collection of Dunhuang Grottoes), Mr. Wu Jian (Director of the Digitization Center of Dunhuang Academy), Ms. Wang Miao (Chief Editor, Hong Kong China Tourism Press), Mr. Water Poon (Renowned Photographer), have been invited to speak on Dunhuang at the public lectures.
After their study tour to Dunhuang in October, the HKU students will present their project reports and exhibit their learning outcomes at a student conference in November. Prof. Lee Chack Fan (Director of the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole, The University of Hong Kong) and Prof. Leung Ping Kwan (Chair Professor of Comparative Literature, Lingnan University) will provide feedback on the student projects and share their views on the issues concerned.
‘Dunhuang Culture and Preservation Study Series' is an activity of the HKU Centenary. It is supported by Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole, HKU, The Commercial Press (H.K.) Ltd, Friends of Dunhuang (HK) and 84000 Communications.
