The Road to 1911: A Visual History - Photo Exhibition and Guided Tours
The "1911" exhibition, a programme to mark the centenary of The University of Hong Kong, features an extraordinary selection of 86 photographs brought together for the first time from collections worldwide by Liu Heung Shing, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photo-journalist. The photographs, which date from the 1860s to the early 1920s, provide an insight into the origins of modern China, in which Hong Kong played a key role. They illustrate the social conditions and attitudes of the era, the atmosphere inside the imperial court in the dying days of the Qing Dynasty, the lives of the mighty and the poor, and various events that helped shape the transition of China from the empire to the republican era.

World Suicide Prevention Day 2011:
Symposium and Global Launch Press Conference - First Time in Asia
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates a global mortality rate of suicide of 16.0 per 100,000 population, or one death every 40 seconds. Suicide rates in the Western Pacific Region have been steadily rising in recent decades. As one of the metropolitan cities in this region, Hong Kong has recorded 943 suicide cases or 13.3 per 100,000 people in 2010 (Coroner's Court, 2011 data). In recent years there have been significant changes in the geographical and demographic distribution of suicides. Research and resources are still limited and require development. Significant community efforts will be required to prevent suicide on a large scale.
On World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), September 10, 2011, the theme "Preventing Suicide in Multicultural Societies" will focus on culture and diversity in communities, whilst encouraging the development and implementation of suicide intervention strategies. The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), the Hong Kong Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention (CSRP) and The University of Hong Kong are pleased to invite press members to attend the WSPD symposium and the associated press conference (see enclosed link). During the press conference, IASP President Dr Lanny Berman, together with CSRP Director, Professor Paul S. F. Yip, will announce the latest international and local findings on suicide and discuss practices of suicide prevention in this region and beyond.

Inter-faith Dialogue: "Religion and violence: seeing it as it is"
Among the many consequences 9/11 has left behind, renewed religious mistrust and violence might prove the most costly. As religion influences history in many ways - not least by shaping decision-makers' worldviews - the collision between different religious worldviews has certainly contributed to further violence and war. But, do religions have any basis on which violence can be justified? Does any religious scripture authorize, promote or incentivise violence? If so, on which basis, and under which circumstances?
The Hong Kong representatives of three monotheist religions come together in this event to discuss their religions' common grounds and differences in relation to violence.
Date: September 15, 2011 (Thursday)
Time: 7pm to 9pm
Venue: Rayson Huang Theatre, HKU
