University Artists Scheme:Public Forum on WU XIA

Filmmaker Peter Ho Sun Chan will dialogue with cultural columnist Dr Ma Ka Fai about his latest film WU XIA. The Forum will be moderated by Dr Esther M.K. Cheung from the Department of Comparative Literature, HKU. Topics for discussion include trends and developments in Hong Kong-China co-productions, gender relations, and the impact the film has had on the martial arts genre. There will be a screening of WU XIA before the Public Forum.
Members of the media are cordially invited to attend the event. Details are as follows:

The UAS, with its focus on artists of international calibre, is the first of its kind at the University of Hong Kong. We bring renowned artists to the campus to enrich the lives of our students. The artists will pursue projects and activities in the form of lectures, workshops, screenings, exhibitions, and performances. They will have an opportunity to work closely with colleagues, practitioners, and students in the University and in the general community.

Peter Ho-Sun Chan
Filmmaker
Peter Ho-Sun Chan is an acclaimed film director who plays a preeminent role in global cinema. He was a co-founder of United Filmmakers Organization (UFO) in the early 1990s and of the production company Applause Pictures in 2000. His first film "Alan and Eric: Between Hello and Goodbye" (1991) was awarded Best Film of the Year by the Directors' Guild of Hong Kong, as was "He's a Woman, She's a Man" (1994) for which Chan also won Best Director. "Comrades, Almost a Love Story" (1996) won a record nine Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA) and was voted one of the Ten Best Movies of 1997 by "Time" magazine. Subsequently, Chan moved to Hollywood and directed "The Love Letter" (1999) for Steven Spielberg's Dreamworks SKG. His groundbreaking musical, "Perhaps, Love" (2005), was one of the year's top-grossing films in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and was honored with a record twenty-nine awards, including Best Director at the Golden Horse Awards. "Warlords" (2008), swept the 27th Hong Kong Film Awards, winning eight prizes, most notably Best Film and Best Director. His latest film "Wu Xia" premiered at the 64th annual Cannes Film Festival in May 2011.
Dr Ma Ka Fai
Cultural Columnist & Assistant Director of the Chinese Civilisation Centre at City University of Hong Kong
Dr Ma Ka Fai received his bachelor's degree from the Department of Psychology at National Taiwan University, majoring in social psychology, before entering the media profession. He started writing in his university years, and has published several books including "Daughterly Love", "Urban New Humans", "Psychological Tidbits", and "Studies on Li Ao". In 1996, he received his PhD in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, majoring in political sociology and cultural studies. He set up the "Century", a supplement of "Ming Pao Daily", which soon became an important forum for Hong Kong's intelligentsia. In 1998, he joined City University of Hong Kong as Assistant Director of the Chinese Civilisation Centre.
