Knowledge Exchange Conference cum “3+3+4” Symposium on Knowledge Transfer

Knowledge Exchange, or Knowledge Transfer, has formally been recognized by the University Grants Committee (UGC) and is described as the "third mission" of higher education. The challenge is how to make the knowledge of higher education institutions accessible and work for society.
The University of Hong Kong (HKU), together with all the other UGC-funded institutions, will jointly organize the Knowledge Exchange Conference: Knowledge Transforming Society. The Conference incorporates the "3+3+4" Symposium on Knowledge Transfer as an integral part of the programme. This Conference is sponsored by UGC.

Date: December 5 - 6, 2011 (Monday - Tuesday)
Time: 9:00 am - 5:30 pm
Venue: Room S221-S228, Level 2, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre
(The Conference will be conducted in English. Simultaneous interpretation in English will be provided for a presentation to be delivered in Putonghua.)
Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, Vice-Chancellor/President of HKU, and Professor Eng-kiong Yeoh, UGC member and Convenor of the "3+3+4" Group, will officiate at the opening ceremony of the Conference to be held on December 5, 2011 at 9:00 am.
Distinguished local speakers include Miss Janet Wong (Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region), Hon. Mrs Regina Ip, GBS, JP (Member of the Legislative Council, Hong Kong), Ir Dr Hon. Samson Tam, JP (Member of Legislative Council [Information Technology]), and Mr Michael Lynch, CBE, AM (Chief Executive Officer, West Kowloon Cultural District Authority).
Renowned experts from overseas and Mainland China will share their experience and insights on key issues relating to technology transfer, China's 12th Five-Year Plan, impact of non-technology-related knowledge exchange on society, and the relationship between "3+3+4" education system and knowledge transfer. They include Professor Eugene Wong (Professor Emeritus, College of Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, United States), Professor Warren Bebbington (Deputy Vice-Chancellor [University Affairs], The University of Melbourne, Australia), Dr Alan Paau (Vice Provost for Technology Transfer and Economic Development, Cornell University, United States), Professor Teck Seng Low (Managing Director, Agency for Science, Technology and Research, Singapore), Dr Stephen Merrill (Executive Director, Board on Science, Technology, and Economic Policy, The National Academies, United States), Ms Qiu Xuan (Vice Director, Science, Industry, Trade and Information Technology Commission of Shenzhen Municipality, PRC), Prof. dr. Maurits van Rooijen (CEO & Rector Magnificus, Nyenrode Business Universiteit, The Netherlands), Sir Brian Fender (President, The Institute of Knowledge Transfer, United Kingdom), Professor Kim Knott (Director of the Arts Innovation and Impact Centre, University of Leeds, United Kingdom), Mr Jerry de la Harpe (Executive Director [Engagement and Partnerships], The University of Melbourne, Australia), Professor Christopher Megone (Director of Enterprise and Knowledge Transfer, Faculty of Arts, University of Leeds, United Kingdom), Mr Tom Hockaday (Managing Director, Isis Innovation Ltd, United Kingdom), Professor John Houghton (Director of Information Technologies and the Information Economy Program, and Professorial Fellow, Centre for Strategic Economic Studies, Victoria University, Australia) and Ms Yuko Hasegawa (Chief Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Japan).
Through conference presentations and poster exhibition during the two-day event, over 100 researchers of the UGC-funded institutions will share their success stories in knowledge exchange with society.
The opening ceremony of the "3+3+4" Symposium on Knowledge Transfer, which will be officiated by Professor Walter W. Yuen, Vice President (Academic Development) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, will be held on December 6, 2011 at 9:00 am.
