Abstract:
Much of the media focus on Europe has been on the various economic crises in the Eurozone. However, underlying the financial crisis, there are deep social and political currents that get too little attention, yet they are fundamental in the understanding of the dynamics, especially the prospects of Europe. These issues include identity, legitimacy, solidarity (or lack thereof), demographics, expansion, institutions, etc. Professor Lehmann will take an in-depth look into Europe and will attempt to assess how Europe should be perceived in the course of this major crossroad it is facing. He will then address the implications for Asia-Pacific in respect to the different "kinds" of Europe that may emerge.
Jean-Pierre Lehmann has been Professor of International Political Economy at IMD, Lausanne, Switzerland, since 1997. Professor Lehmann founded the Evian Group in 1995, an international coalition of corporate, government, and opinion leaders, united by a common vision of enhancing global prosperity for the benefit of all by fostering an open, inclusive, sustainable and equitable global market economy in a rules-based multilateral framework.
He is also Senior Fellow at the Fung Global Institute in Hong Kong, and Visiting Professor, Faculty of Business and Economics at The University of Hong Kong. His latest publication, co-edited with his son Fabrice Lehmann, is Peace and Prosperity Through World Trade (Cambridge University Press, 2010).
