PROGRAMME:
At the 1889 Paris Universal Exposition, under the shadow of the newly erected Eifel tower, Debussy heard for the first time the sounds of the gamelan. It was an ear-opening experience that would influence the course of Western music. We hope that in this programme you will hear resonances of an East-West encounter that is still inspiring composers today.

AWARD-WINNING COMPOSITION:
This programme features some of the most promising young composers of our day, including the 2010 Dvořák Composition Competition winner Daniel LO. Details of his winning work, 《Galactic Gala》, are as follows:
This piece was written for the piano, the drum set and the gamelan gong kebyar, three amazingly different instruments that display similar percussive features. Composed by Daniel Lo, the piece was awarded the third prize and a special prize for the best chamber music at the International Antonín Dvořák Composition Competition in Prague.
Daniel LO Ting-cheung (b.1986) is currently an MPhil (Music Composition) candidate under the supervision of Dr. Chan Hing-yan at the University of Hong Kong where he received his BA (Music) degree with first class honors. LO has received formal instruction for piano and percussion since childhood and is now a passionate jazz piano player.
LO has been the recipient of various awards and scholarships. In addition to the prize for 《Galactic Gala》, he was a winner of the New Generation 2010 organized by the Hong Kong Composers' Guild. His work《Sojourner's Song》 was awarded the first place in the 2010-2011 Migratory Journeys International Composition Competition, and will be premiered in Chicago in March 2012. His recent composition 《Laura》has been awarded the first prize in the MeA Competition Contest in Rome, Italy.
LO takes an interest in a wide spectrum of music, ranging from Renaissance music to modern jazz, from the works of Gesualdo to those of Chick Corea. His works have been performed by world renowned ensembles and performers including Bang on a Can (U.S.A.), Orchestra of Our Time (U.S.A.), Piccolo Orchestra (Italy), Hong Kong Kamerata, Hong Kong New Music Ensemble and violinist Yao Jue.
