Launching of the Gallant Ho Experiential Learning Centre
15 Mar 2012
Experiential learning is a fundamental and distinctive feature in HKU's new undergraduate curriculum. It takes students into workplaces and other settings where they have direct encounter with the phenomena being studied. It is a powerful form of learning in which students develop an integrated and holistic understanding of the issues and skills required to deal with them. Students learn how to engage in critical intellectual enquiry by putting textbook knowledge to test, tackle novel situations and ill-defined problems, and develop global citizenship.
HKU Faculties have been incorporating some form of experiential learning into their curricula, and some have made it a graduation requirement. The Gallant Ho Experiential Learning Centre, funded by a recent donation from Dr. Gallant Ho, will be set up to facilitate and promote experiential learning at HKU. The Centre will work with community partners both in and outside Hong Kong to identify projects for HKU students of different disciplines. The projects will help meeting the needs of the community partners as well as the learning of HKU students. On average, the Centre will provide financial means and other forms of support to 1000 students to complete their experiential learning projects per year.
Dr. Gallant Ho, donor of the Centre and an HKU alumnus, and Professor Tsui Lap-chee, Vice-Chancellor and President, will officiate the launching ceremony. Professor Amy Tsui, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) will also highlight a few exemplary experiential learning projects at HKU. They will be joined by Dr. Richard Armour, Secretary General of the University Grants Committee.
