Self-Dignified Citizen and the Making of Taiwanese DemocracyWhy do people from Taiwan appear to be more polite and orderly than other Chinese? Why do they appear to be more civilized and modernized than other populations of Asia? This talk will attempt to describe the formation of what I call "the self-dignified citizen" in Taiwan in recent decades as a way to understanding the specificities of Taiwanese democracy and governance. This kind of citizenship calls for a study into the politics of affect/emotions as it entangles the new form of power of rule in certain rising democracies in Asia.
The speaker, Professor Josephine Ho of Taiwan's National Central University is one of the foremost feminist sex-radical scholars in East Asia and writes extensively and provocatively on many cutting-edge issues, spearheading sex-positive views in the region on female sexuality, gender/sexuality education, queer studies, sex-work studies, and transgenderism.
