Engineering Centenary Distinguished Lecture

The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) held today (June 27) the third Engineering Centenary Distinguished Lecture entitled “Passion, Professionalism and Collaboration – in Support of Sichuan Reconstruction” delivered by one of its distinguished alumni, Ir Mak Chai Kwong, GBS, JP.
Ir Mak Chai Kwong is a civil engineer by profession, a long-serving civil servant, and a Team Leader of Sichuan Reconstruction of Development Bureau of the Government of the HKSAR. The lecture has provided an update on the HKSAR Government reconstruction effort in the past four years and discussed how the reconstruction projects were implemented and managed under different cultural backgrounds, industrial practices and methods of project delivery, including cost control and monitoring of project management.
HKU Dean of Engineering Professor Norman C. Tien officiated at the lecture which was sponsored by Alpha Appliances Limited.
“If the purpose of education, in particular engineering education, is to prepare individuals to contribute to the society through solving real and practical problem, with the application of hard and soft skills, what has been done by Ir Mak in putting the arduous task of reconstruction forward is definitely a testament to this truth, ” said Professor Norman C. Tien.
“Ir Mak’s headship in the rebuilding endeavors of HKSAR Government in Sichuan demonstrates exceptional qualities in which we take pride. The University always believes in the power of knowledge in enhancing the quality of life. With this in mind, we prepare students to be global leaders who address the most challenging problems worldwide and drive tomorrow’s technology by equipping them with generic skills in problem solving, creative thinking and in leadership in addition to technical knowledge to meet the demand of the modern world,” he added.
