The University of Hong Kong (HKU) held a ceremony today (October 4) to present Honorary University Fellowships to nine distinguished individuals, in recognition of their contributions to the University and to the community. HKU Pro-Chancellor Dr the Honourable David Kwok Po Li presided at the ceremony.
The nine distinguished individuals are:
- Mr Koon Chung CHAN
- Mr Chan Yau CHONG
- Dr York Yat Ngok CHOW
- Ms Belinda Kwai Yi HUNG
- Mr Philip Bing Lun LAM
- Mr Simon Siu Man SUEN
- Dr Joseph Sun Pao TING
- Mr Joseph Chong Chun WONG
- Dr Nicolas Shu Yan YEUNG
At the ceremony, HKU Vice-Chancellor Professor Lap-Chee Tsui extended his gratitude on behalf of the University community to the fellows for their contributions to the University and society.
He said: "This evening we will be honouring nine individuals who have shown, in thought, and word, and deed, how deeply they appreciate the value of education, and how important the welfare of society is to them.”
The Fellowships are a means for the University community to thank and salute the lives of those who have made important contributions in their own unique ways to the University, to academia, and to Hong Kong. Professor Tsui praised the nine honorary fellows as “true examples of courage and leadership”.
“They themselves lead by example,” he said, “their significant contributions are made selflessly, and we are glad to have this opportunity to express our gratitude.”
Before the ceremony, participants observed a moment of silence for the Lamma IV tragic accident. The University community is in particular saddened by the loss of two HKU alumni, Mr Koo Man Cheung and Mr Leung Ka Kit, both recent graduates of the BEng (in Mechanical Engineering) programme who are also current postgraduate students, in the incident. The University flags have been flown at half-mast to pay tribute to Mr Koo and Mr Leung and all the other victims of the accident.
The Honorary University Fellowships was established in 1995 to reaffirm the University's link between town and gown. For the recipients' citations, biographies and photos, please visit: http://www4.hku.hk/honfellows/ .
