HKU Libraries to hold an International Conference and Gala Dinner to
Celebrate The Centenary Anniversary HKU Libraries &
The Eightieth Anniversary of Fung Ping Shan Library
06 Nov 2012
This Thursday (8 November), the University of Hong Kong Libraries is holding an international conference at Wang Gungwu Theatre and a gala dinner at Loke Yew Hall as a part of the Libraries’ Centenary celebration activities and to celebrate Fung Ping Shan Library 80th Anniversary.
The conference is a defining event in the Libraries’ centenary celebrations which have taken place over the past two years. In addition to hearing from a diverse range of library leaders, the Libraries will also acknowledge and present the special celebratory acquisitions acquired for each of the ten faculties in commemoration of this event. These acquisitions reflect the depth of the Libraries’ collections, ranging from a 1653 imprint on the subject of embryology through to a collection of 101 online books. Details of the ten acquisitions can be found at http://lib.hku.hk/hkul100/ic/10acq.html .
Joining the conference are Vice-Chancellor Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, the representatives from the ten faculties and some 270 overseas and local library leaders from all over the world.
The gala dinner at Loke Yew Hall is a celebration for HKU Libraries’ century of change. From humble beginnings in 1912, located in two rooms in the University’s Main Building, the collections of the Libraries are now housed in seven libraries all dedicated to serving the University in fulfillment of its mission.
The eightieth anniversary of the Fung Ping Shan Library will also be celebrated at the dinner with the launching of the book Fung ping Shan, The Man, His Life and His Library. The book tells the story of a successful businessman, generous benefactor of many charities, tireless founder of educational institutions and keen supporter of libraries. Author of the book, Mrs Nelly Fung, married to Kenneth Hing Cheung Fung, son of the late Sir Kenneth Fung Ping Fan and a grandson of Fung Ping Shan, will share with the dinner guests the legacy of Fung Ping Shan.
Media representatives are cordially invited to cover the whole event.
