Browsing for Happiness Browsing for Happiness – Meeting Director Chen Kaige at HKU
12 Nov 2012
World renowned film director Mr. Chen Kaige’s new film “Caught in the Web” has been selected as the Chinese entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards. Mr. Chen will participate in an open forum at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) tomorrow (November 13, Tuesday) to talk about his latest film and his insights on cyber culture.
28 years ago Chen stunned the world by his debut “Yellow Earth”. Throughout this period Chinese society has undergone tremendous changes since the “Reform and Opening Up” policy. With China’s meteoric rise, rapid urbanization and advancement of information technology, the city lives change drastically. “Caught in the web” is set against such background: a young lady refused to give her seat to an elderly on a bus, and the whole incident was filmed and circulated in the Internet. It stirred up a storm in southern China and changed the fate of more than 10 people within seven days. In the Mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong, words like “internet bullying”, “online judges” and “human flesh search engine” reflect the rise of the Internet in the daily life of city dwellers. This film and the talk give us a perfect chance to reflect upon how cyber culture impacts on humanity.
