Member of Peter, Paul and Mary arrives at HKU for music and sharing
Music, Community, Respect and Appreciation:
The Educational Path to Global Harmony
15 Nov 2012
Peter Yarrow, member of the legendary folk trio “Peter, Paul and Mary”, will share his insights in global harmony and social inclusion and perform some of his classic songs in the University of Hong Kong tomorrow (November 16).
Peter’s gift for songwriting has produced some of the most moving songs Peter, Paul & Mary have recorded, including "Puff, the Magic Dragon" and "The Great Mandala And along with that musical creativity came his commitment to social change.
In 1999, he founded Operation Respect, non-profit organization working to assure each child and youth a respectful, safe and compassionate climate of learning where their academic, social and emotional development can take place free of bullying, ridicule and violence. The organization disseminates educational resources that are designed to establish a climate that reduces the emotional and physical cruelty some children inflict upon each other by behaviors such as ridicule, bullying and-in extreme cases-violence.
Throughout, he has used his music as advocacy. "Most of my work for the past 25 years," Yarrow noted, "has been devoted to organising demonstrations, benefits and campaigns, many of which have had the effect of bringing a policy debate to public focus or moving a political agenda forward. It's become a cliché to say 'think globally and act locally,' but it works."
