26 Feb 2013
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) will hold the "First-in-the-Family Education Fund" Presentation Ceremony tomorrow (February 27).
At the ceremony, recipients of the "First-in-the-Family Education Fund" will share their aspirations and experiences. HKU Vice-Chancellor Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, Dean of Student Affairs Dr Albert Chau, donors and alumni will attend to share their experiences with the recipients.
The "First-in-the-Family Education Fund" was established in 2008 with the aim of creating equal learning opportunities for students, who are the first generation in their families to attend university, to actively take part in experiential learning activities. Each student recipient will be given $10,000 to plan on their own activities to enrich their learning experience and university life. In the five years since its establishment, 1,500 students have benefited from the Scheme, thanked to the generous support from over 550 alumni and members of the community.
Two recipients of last year, Education student Miss Kia Cheung Sze-ki (year 2) and Science student Mr Ho Ka-chun (year 2), went for volunteer work in Kenya of Africa with a few hallmates after six months’ planning, to provide service to children there and to help tackle problems of mosquito infestation and polluted water sources. Their photos in Kenya are shared in the press release.
