SSP 9th Teacher Workshop by the Faculty of Education, HKU
“Cross-cultural Understanding and Classroom Teaching”

Centre for Advancement of Chinese Language Education and Research (CACLER), Faculty of Education, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) will hold a workshop on “Cross-cultural Understanding and Classroom Teaching” tomorrow (June 8, Saturday). The focus will be on enhancing the intercultural sensitivity in understanding the Non-Cantonese Speaking (NCS) students and the meaning and challenges of cultural integration.
CACLER, HKU held the “Cross-cultural Independent Enquiry Studies” from March to May, 2013. Secondary students comprised Chinese as well as ethnic minorities formed groups to study different ethnics’ cultural studies in the community. The award presentation ceremony of the activity, and the students’ project display was held on May 25, 2013. This Workshop is a further expansion on the theme of the activity.
In this workshop, the following issues will be touched:
- Explore the concepts of cultural integration and intercultural education
- Share experiences and understanding of NCS students’ cultural characteristics
- Discuss the communication difficulties due to differences in culture and identity
- Share experiences in adding cross-cultural considerations into the school curriculum
The speakers are Dr Ki Wing Wah, Associate Professor, Faculty of Education, HKU and Dr Tai Chung Pui, Post-doctoral Fellow, Division of Chinese Language & Literature, Faculty of Education, HKU and invited principals, teachers as well as parents.
