HKU Faculty of Education public lecture on “Values, Principles and Design in Mathematics Education”
20 Jun 2013
Many teachers may have theories and concepts in mind that the social, personal and intrinsic values of learning mathematics are widely recognised and are clearly evident in curricula specifications in the world. However, how to embody these values and principles in the design of mathematics lessons so as to underpin effective teaching would be a challenge. In response to the issue, Professor Malcolm Swan, CANOTTA Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), will deliver a public lecture entitled “Values, Principles and Design in Mathematics Education” tomorrow (June 21, Friday).
Professor Malcolm Swan is Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Nottingham. He leads the design team of the Centre for Research in Mathematics Education (CRME) of the University, playing the principal role in the design and development of many of its products. His research is mainly into the theory, development and evaluation of teaching situations and professional development in mathematics education. This includes: the design of situations which foster reflection, discussion and metacognitive activity; the design of situations in which children construct mathematical concepts and develop problem solving strategies; and the design of formative and evaluative assessment.
Knowledge exchange is one of the core commitments of the HKU Faculty of Education, which is realised by the Faculty’s engagement in multiple partnerships with professionals and community both locally and internationally. One of the significant initiatives is marked by the visit of Professor Malcolm Swan under the scheme of CANOTTA Distinguished Visiting Fellowship in Mathematics Education 2013.
Details of the lecture are as follows:
Date: June 21, 2013, Friday
Time: 9:00am to 10:30am
