HKU Faculty of Dentistry to hold Inaugural
"Kindergarten Teacher Summer Programme on Oral Health Education"
11 Jul 2013
Media representatives are cordially invited to attend the HKU Faculty of Dentistry’s first “Kindergarten Teacher Summer Programme on Oral Health Education” on 17 July 2013 (Wednesday).
The Summer Programme aims to leverage the Faculty’s expertise to help reduce the frequency and severity of early childhood caries (tooth decay before 6 years of age) in Hong Kong, by training teachers how to deliver oral health education to preschoolers.
According to government figures, early childhood caries affects about half of the city’s preschool-age children. The disease causes pain, and serious cases can cause infection of teeth and possibly the rest of the body. However, early childhood caries is completely preventable. Because Hong Kong currently has no city-wide preschool dental service, kindergarten teachers are in an excellent position to provide effective oral health education to their students.
Therefore, the half-day Summer Programme (repeated on 16 and 17 July 2013) will train a total of about 200 teachers from kindergartens run by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals and the Po Leung Kuk. The event will consist of a Lecture (08:45 – 10:20) followed by small-group discussions (10:50 – 12:00).
Media are invited to attend the Summer Programme Lecture. The details of the Lecture are as follows:
