Twelve researchers awarded 2024 Asian Young Scientist Fellows
Scientific research insights sharing in Annual Conference
29 Oct 2024
The “2024 Asian Young Scientist Fellowship (AYSF) Annual Conference” will be held at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) on 31 October. This event is one of the highlights of the "2024 Future Science Prize Week." Twelve outstanding researchers have been awarded the "2024 Asian Young Scientist Fellows.” These fellows hail from Hong Kong, mainland China, Singapore, Korea, Japan, and India. Among these fellows, three are from Hong Kong. They include Professor Hoi Chun PO, the Hari Harilela Assistant Professor of the Department of Physics at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; Professor Manchun LEE, Assistant Professor of the Department of Mathematics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong; and Professor Kai LENG, Assistant Professor of the Department of Applied Physics at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Professor Xiaobo YIN, Associate Vice President of HKU, and Professor Hong WU, the Chair of the 2024 Steering Committee for the Asian Young Scientist Fellowship, will serve as officiating guests for the event's opening and award ceremonies, delivering speeches. Additionally, the newly awarded Fellows will present their research results at the Conference.
The Conference will be followed by the two-day "Science Symposium" from 1 to 2 November. This event will bring world-renowned scientists to Hong Kong, including Professor Benjamin List, the 2021 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, Professor Efim Zelmanov, Fields Medal Laureate, and Professor Peter Zoller, Wolf Prize Laureate. They will share their insights on cutting-edge scientific discoveries and interdisciplinary innovations.
The grand finale of Prize Week will be the “Laureates’ Dialogue with the Youth” and the “2024 Future Science Prize Award Ceremony,” both taking place on 3 November. This year, four scientists have been honoured in the three Future Science Prize categories: “Life Science Prize,” “Physical Science Prize,” and “Mathematics and Computer Science Prize.” The awarded scientists will exchange ideas with local high school students during the Laureates’ Dialogue with the Youth event. The Award Ceremony will be held on the afternoon of the same day at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, to honour the awardees’ contributions to scientific development and humanity.

About the Asian Young Scientist Fellowship (AYSF)
The Asian Young Scientist Fellowship (AYSF) was launched in 2022 by the founding members of the Future Science Prize, which is established to reward young scientists who have made outstanding scientific achievements, and encourage more private funds to promote basic science research in Asia. The AYSF provides a funding of USD$100,000 to each selected young fellow in life science, physical science, mathematics and computer science for their research, and creates a community that promotes explorative thinking, cross-disciplinary collaboration, international exchanges and mentorship.
The AYSF has partnered with the University of Hong Kong (HKU) to co-organise a series of collaborative events, such as the AYSF Annual Conferences and Webinars. These initiatives aim to promote scientific and technological innovation, entrepreneurial incubation and public-private partnership, and drive innovation and entrepreneurship through research and talent development.
