HKU to invite visually-impaired secondary students
to join its summer programme for the first time
22 Apr 2014
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has been a steward of inclusive education, emphasizing well-rounded development for students of all backgrounds. It strongly believes that supporting students with physical disabilities to achieve academic excellence through offering extensive services and support is one of the initiatives to promote inclusive education.
This summer, HKU’s commitment in inclusive education will expand from low income and ethnic minority students to students with disabilities. A total of eight visually-impaired students from local schools will be sponsored to participate in two residential flagship summer programmes, Leadership and Innovation Summer Camp (LISC) and Crimson Summer Exchange (CSE) for the first time. They will be provided with opportunities to foster their leadership skills, to enhance their communication abilities and to motivate other participants to overcome challenges.
The Leadership & Innovation Summer Camp, through its programme activities including case analysis, interactive games, group discussions and site visits, aims to foster a sense of leadership, stimulate creative thinking and innovation, promote teamwork as well as enhance student’s sense of social awareness and empowering them to care for the disadvantaged. CSE, jointly organized by the Crimson China Cultural Exchange Foundation Limited and the University of Hong Kong, is a cross-cultural education programme that brings teaching fellows, who are undergraduates and graduates from various universities including Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford, Princeton and Columbia, together with youth in a learning environment intended to bridge cultures and explore higher education. The small class teaching settings led by top undergraduates will explore topics of globalization and world issues, while enhance the awareness of students in becoming global citizens and broaden their horizons.
