HKU Council unanimously reaffirms commitment to HKU-Shenzhen Hospital
26 Jul 2014
The Council of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) met this morning to review the independent consultants’ report on the HKU-Shenzhen Hospital’s (the Hospital) operations and financial situation. After reviewing the report, the Council resolved to continue to develop the Hospital project.
HKU Council Chairman Dr Leong Che-hung said after the meeting: “The Council unanimously supported the further development of the HKU Shenzhen Hospital project.”
It was agreed at the meeting that HKU will share the consultants’ report with the Shenzhen Municipal Government together with a number of initiatives that should help improve the effectiveness of the operations of the hospital. These include improving the operation of the International Medical Centre, increasing the number of private beds as well as speeding up the service provision in the five Areas of Excellence, among others. HKU will also request that the Shenzhen Government enables a ‘Green Channel’ to be in place for efficient approval of licences for medical equipment and other clearances. Dr Leong also expressed thanks to the continuous support by the Shenzhen Government.
HKU President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Mathieson said: “The Hospital is a totally new initiative with an unprecedented operational model. It is normal practice to have a constant review of operations and this review was necessary.” He emphasized that the task is to realize some of the opportunities for HKU that exist in the project and at the same time to ensure HKU will continue to work with the Shenzhen Government to manage the risks.
As a teaching hospital, the Hospital provides more room and opportunities in terms of research, teaching and learning, as well as clinical services. The Hospital has also introduced Hong Kong’s medical system into Shenzhen and serves as a reference for medical system reform in the Mainland with initial positive effects being recognized.
