HKU presents Honorary University Fellowships to five distinguished individuals

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) held a ceremony today (September 28) to present Honorary University Fellowships to five distinguished individuals, in recognition of their contributions to the University and to the community. HKU Pro-Chancellor Dr the Honourable David Kwok Po Li presided at the ceremony.
The five distinguished individuals are:

The Fellowships are a means for the University community to thank and salute the lives of those who have made important contributions in their own unique ways to the University, to academia, and to Hong Kong. The Honorary University Fellowships was established in 1995 to reaffirm the University's link between town and gown.
The five Honorary University Fellows
Mrs Margaret LEUNG KO May Yee
Mrs Margaret Leung is Chief Executive of Chong Hing Bank and a respected leader in the banking sector. She holds a BSocSc from the University of Hong Kong.
Mrs Leung has a distinguished career in banking and has served as Director of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation and Chief Executive of Hang Seng Bank. She is a strong promoter of diversity and women in business: in addition to being a role model, she takes part in local and international diversity events as a speaker or participant.
At the University of Hong Kong, Mrs Leung is a current Member of both Court and Council and the Treasurer of the University, and has lent her support and counsel to her alma mater in many capacities, including inter alia, as Chair of the Steering Committee on HKU’s participation in a new hospital in Hong Kong, Chair of the Review Panel on HKU’s participation in the HKU-Shenzhen Hospital and as a Mentor in the HKU Mentorship Programme.
Mrs Leung has also contributed to education through other institutions, including the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong Baptist University and the Hang Seng Management College.
Mrs Leung serves on numerous public bodies, including as Director of the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited and Steward of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and has served as Board Member of the Hospital Authority, Member of the Advisory Committee of the Securities and Futures Commission and the Banking Review Tribunal, and Board Member and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Community Chest.
She was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 2009 and awarded a Silver Bauhinia Star in 2012.
Professor Frederick MA Si Hang
Professor Frederick Ma is the Chairman of MTR Corporation Limited, former Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury and former Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Hong Kong SAR Government. He is currently also an Independent Non-Executive of FWD Group, a Director of Husky Energy Inc., and a Non-Executive Director of the China National Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Corporation (COFCO Group).
Professor Ma holds a BA (Honours) from the University of Hong Kong and majored in economics and history. After graduation, he held different major positions of various local and overseas banks, financial institutions and major companies, including Chase Manhattan Bank, Royal Bank of Canada Dominion Securities, JP Morgan Chase, Kumagai Gumi (HK) Limited and Pacific Century Cyberworks Limited. He has rich experience in the banking and financial sectors.
In 2002, Professor Ma joined the Hong Kong SAR Government as the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury and assumed the post of Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development in 2007. He resigned from the Government in 2008 due to medical reasons.
At the University of Hong Kong, Professor Ma established the Frederick Ma Si Hang Scholarships from 2002 to 2006 for the award of five scholarships to undergraduate students in the Department of History. In 2008, he was appointed Honorary Professor in the HKU School of Economics and Finance.
Professor Ma is a Member of the International Advisory Council of China Investment Corporation and the Global Advisory Council of the Bank of America, and is a Professor of Finance Practice in the Institute of Advanced Executive Education at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and an Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Business Administration at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He was conferred the degree of Honorary Doctor of Social Sciences by Lingnan University in 2014.
He was awarded a Gold Bauhinia Star in 2009 and appointed a Justice of the Peace in 2010.
Mr MAN Cheuk Fei
Mr Man Cheuk Fei is a distinguished journalist, and Publisher and Chief Executive Officer of the Master Insight Media Limited. He holds a BA from the University of Hong Kong and an MPhil in Government and Public Administration from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. A believer in lifelong education, he has studied on scholarship at Stanford University, the Poynter Institute for Media Studies in Florida, and Tsinghua University’s School of Economics and Management. He was awarded a Knight Fellowship from Stanford University and a Nieman Fellowship from Harvard University.
Mr Man started his journalistic career in 1990 at Next Magazine as a political reporter, and joined the Hong Kong Economic Journal (HKEJ) in 1992 as Editor/Writer of the Commentary section. He became Assistant Chief Editor in 2000, served as Chief Editor of HKEJ Monthly from 2001 to 2013 and launched Master Insight Media in 2014. He has published five books and is currently completing his sixth.
Mr Man’s loyalty to the University of Hong Kong began during his undergraduate years, when he participated in different student bodies, including as the elected Internal Vice-President of the Students’ Union and a Tutor of the Old Halls. As an alumnus, he has served as a Member of HKU’s Court and Council, and as a Standing Committee Member of Convocation. Mr Man has lent his support and counsel to numerous panels and committees at his alma mater, including as Chairperson of the Discrimination Complaints Committee, and has been inter alia, a Member of the Grievances Panel for Staff, the Council’s Group to Hear Appeals of Disciplinary Committee Cases, the Committee for the Selection of Wardens and Hall Tutors, the Review Panel on the Centenary Ceremony, the Search Committee for the Dean of Dentistry in 2012 and the Selection Committee for the next HKU Vice-Chancellor in 2013.
Other organisations and institutions that have had the benefit of Mr Man’s leadership and support include the Hong Kong Federation of Journalists, the Hong Kong University Graduates Association, the HKUGA Education Foundation, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Lingnan University, the Hong Kong University of Education and the Hang Seng Management College.
The Honourable Abraham SHEK Lai Him
The Honourable Abraham Shek is the Member representing the real estate and construction industry in the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. He holds a BA and a Diploma in Education from the University of Sydney, a Certificate in the Senior Transport Management Course of the Ashridge Centre for Transport Management, UK, and a Diploma in Management Studies from the University of Hong Kong.
Mr Shek started his career in the Swire Shipping Agencies Company Limited and has served as General Manager of the Hong Kong Export Lines Limited in the CY Tung Group of Companies, Managing Director of the Afea Star Line – Switzerland /Express Shipping Agencies (UK) Limited, the Commercial Director of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation, and the Chief Executive of the Land Development Corporation.
At the University of Hong Kong, Mr Shek is a current Member of both Court and Council, and has lent his support and counsel to his alma mater in many capacities, including inter alia, helping HKU in the expansion of technology transfer initiatives, the development of business and entrepreneurial opportunities for graduate students, and the strengthening of long-term industry partnerships for the University.
Mr Shek is a Non-Executive Director of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority and a Member of the Commission on Strategic Development of the Central Policy Unit. He serves as Independent Non-Executive Director of the MTR Corporation Limited and holds Directorships at nearly twenty listed companies. He is also the Chairman of the English Schools Foundation.
Mr Shek is an Honorary Fellow of Lingnan University and of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1995, awarded a Silver Bauhinia Star in 2007 and a Gold Bauhinia Star in 2013.
Mr WONG Kai Man
Mr Wong Kai Man is an accountant with 32 years of experience in auditing, initial public offering and computer auditing, and is a Fellow of the UK’s Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA).
Mr Wong holds a BSc from the University of Hong Kong and an MBA from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received his professional qualifications from the ACCA in 1977 and the HKICPA in 1979. He was an audit partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Hong Kong before retiring in June 2005.
Mr Wong is currently a Director of the Victor and William Fung Foundation Limited and a Member of the Financial Reporting Council. He has served various government advisory committees and statutory bodies, and is an Independent Director of three listed companies, a bank in Hong Kong and a number of NGOs.
At the University of Hong Kong, Mr Wong is a current Court and Council Member, and has lent his support and counsel to his alma mater in many capacities, including inter alia, as Chairman of the Audit Committee of the Council, Honorary Associate Professor of the HKU School of Business, Advisory Board Member of the HKU Asia Global Institute HKU and as a Mentor in the HKU Mentorship Programme.
Mr Wong has served as a Council Member of Lingnan University and also of City University of Hong Kong, where he remains a Court Member. With a group of HKU alumni, he helped establish the HKUGA Primary School and HKUGA College.
Mr Wong is an Honorary Fellow of Lingnan University and City University of Hong Kong. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 2002 and awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star in 2007.
