“130 Years of Medicine in Hong Kong” Kick-off Event
Wisdom ‧ Compassion ‧ Commitment
16 Oct 2016
Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKU) hosted the kick-off event for “130 Years of Medicine in Hong Kong”, which indicates the beginning of the yearlong celebratory activities with the theme “Wisdom ‧ Compassion ‧ Commitment”. Professor Gabriel Leung, Dean of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, HKU, said that The Faculty’s history and development is connected with the medical history of Hong Kong. He invited the public to join the series of celebratory activities of the Faculty and review the milestones in Hong Kong’s medical development.
History and Development of Medicine in Hong Kong
Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese, established in 1887 and renamed the Hong Kong College of Medicine in 1907, was both the first tertiary education institution in Hong Kong and the first local school of medicine. In 1911, when HKU was founded, it was amalgamated into the Faculty of Medicine as the University’s premier faculty. In the past 130 years, The Faculty’s history and development is not only inextricably linked with the development of western medicine and the healthcare system of Hong Kong, but also intertwined with the growth of Hong Kong. Throughout the history, graduates of the Faculty have shared wisdom, spread compassion and showed commitment for the advancement of the health and wellbeing of the Hong Kong people.
“2017 is a remarkable year for medical development in Hong Kong. Apart from celebrating the 130th birth year of the Faculty, we also celebrate the important anniversaries of our longstanding hospital partners – Alice Memorial Hospital and the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Charity Foundation (130th), Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital (95th), Tsan Yuk Hospital (95th), Queen Mary Hospital (80th), Grantham Hospital (60th), HKU-Shenzhen Hospital (5th), and the commissioning of Gleneagles Hong Kong Hospital in the spring of 2017. They have grown with us and have shared in our achievements, contributing to the city’s development in medicine,” said Professor Gabriel Leung.
