Handmade in Germany
-- explore the value and future of premium quality design
01 Mar 2017
The University Museum and Art Gallery (UMAG) of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the Direktorenhaus Berlin will present Handmade in Germany, an exhibition that display masterpieces of leading German manufacturers from March 2 to 5, 2017.
Handmade in Germany shows hand-made objects, like designed furniture and jewellery, as well as manufactured silverware and porcelain. Together these artworks represent the value and future of premium quality production with a commitment to time and handiwork against the backdrop of the current trend of mass production and globalisation.
An opening ceremony of the exhibition was held at UMAG today (March 1, 2017). Officiating guests included Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Hong Kong Nicolaus Graf Lambsdorff, Director of the Goethe-Institut Hong Kong Dr. Almuth Meyer-Zollitsch, Handmade in Germany Representative Mr. Matthias Philipp and Director of UMAG Dr Florian Knothe.
This touring exhibition spans several continents and continues for years. It started in Berlin, moved to St. Petersburg (both centres of fine European decorative arts), and tours Asia, America and the Middle East before returning to Europe. The idea of the tour is inspired by the journeyman years which refer to the study period apprentices of German trades went through after completing their apprenticeship. They are similar to the Grand Tour of the European nobility, and some German crafts still follow this tradition today in order to provide journeymen and aspiring master craftsmen with a well-rounded international training.
This exhibition is supported by the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany, German Industry and Commerce Ltd., Rhenus Logistics and German National Tourism Board.
