HKU Faculty of Education holds opening ceremony for Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic extension
17 May 2017
The Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences (SHS Division) of the Faculty of Education (the Faculty), the University of Hong Kong (HKU) held an opening ceremony of the newly extended Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic (the Clinic) at Kennedy Town today (May 17). Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning) Professor Ian Holliday, Associate Director of the Knowledge Exchange Office Professor John Bacon-Shone, Dean of Education Professor Stephen Andrews, Dean of Education designate Professor Lin Goodwin, Head of SHS Division Professor Thomas Klee, and Clinical Education Director Dr Anita Wong officiated at the ceremony.
The Clinic was established along with the SHS Division in the Faculty in 1988. It provides state-of-the-art facilities for the clinical education of speech therapy and audiology students in the SHS Division’s degree programmes. Over 900 students have gained valuable experience in the Clinic and become qualified speech therapists and audiologists. Clinical services have also been provided to over 5,000 individuals in the community.
In 2016, the Faculty provided financial support to expand the facilities at the Kennedy Town Centre from occupying one floor to two floors. This includes the state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment that allows unobtrusive but high-quality recordings to enhance students’ clinical education as well as client service.
The Clinic is committed to providing evidence-based services to individuals with speech, language, communication, swallowing and hearing disorders. It provides diagnostic evaluation, individual and group therapy to individuals of all ages and accepts self- and professional referrals. The Clinic consists of three sections and they are:
a) Student Clinic
Student clinicians provide diagnostic and therapy services under the supervision of an HKU speech therapist. Following the University academic calendar, the Student Clinic provides services for a block of seven weeks from October to December, and for a block of ten weeks from Jan to late April.
b) Specialist Clinic
Clinical supervisors, who are experienced speech therapists themselves, are the service providers. They provide assessment and therapy to individual clients, and professional consultations to external organisations by request all year round.
c) Hearing Clinic
It is open to the public and offers unbiased opinions and a full range of services at affordable rates without waiting in a long queue. Services are conducted by qualified audiologists and supervised postgraduate students.
