HKU Faculty of Education ranks the fourth globally in
Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2018

The Faculty of Education at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) is ranked the fourth globally in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World Rankings by Subject 2018 released today (October 4).
The Faculty has performed well in world rankings. In the QS University Subject Ranking, the Faculty was ranked the sixth globally for two consecutive years in 2015 and 2016, and the seventh for 2017.
In THE world subject rankings, Education was previously grouped under the subject “Social Sciences”, it is the first time that “Education” forms a separate subject ranking. The other universities among the top five for Education in this year’s exercise are: 1) Stanford University, 2) Harvard University, 3) the University of Oxford, and 5) the University of California, Berkeley.
The subject areas used to create this ranking are Education, Teacher Training, and Academic Studies in Education. THE uses 13 performance indicators which are grouped into five areas: Teaching (the learning environment), Research (volume, income and reputation), Citations (research influence), International outlook (staff, students and research), and Industry income (Innovation). The relative weightings of these criteria vary slightly from discipline to discipline. For Education, the weightings are 32.7% Teaching, 29.8% Research, 27.5% Citations, 7.5% International outlook, and 2.5% Industry income. The Faculty is delighted to see that it has obtained the high indicative score of 86.5.
The Interim Dean, Professor David Carless of the Faculty of Education said: “We are very encouraged by this positive outcome which is a testament to the hard work of our colleagues, our former Dean Professor Stephen Andrews, our students and our alumni. In an increasingly competitive higher education landscape, we strive continually to enhance the impact of our scholarship, the quality of the student experience, and our local and international engagement.”
The Faculty of Education was established in HKU in 1984, having previously been a department in the Faculty of Arts and then a School of Education. At present, the Faculty has seven Divisions, seven self-funded research centres and two consortia. The Faculty’s motto is “Leading with passion, serving with commitment”. The Faculty’s vision is to lead the study and practice of education, to influence public policy and improve community life through education, and to nurture graduates who are passionately committed to their professions. The Faculty is generally regarded as the premier teacher education institution in Hong Kong.
In Research, the Faculty has established three Strategic Focal Research Areas: Science of Learning, Education Policy, and Equity and Social Justice, and leads in educational research in Hong Kong. In Learning and Teaching, the Faculty is committed to the continuing enhancement of the student learning experience. In addition, the Faculty places great emphasis on Knowledge Exchange by engaging with and serving the community locally, regionally and globally.
