HKU responds to the media on Policy Address initiatives
11 Oct 2017
An HKU spokesperson responds to the media on Policy Address initiatives concerning Innovation and Technology, Research and Development and a Hostel Development Fund.
"On the research, innovation and entrepreneurship front, we are encouraged by the commitments to R&D and scholarship development including studentships for local research postgraduate students. We believe this is what our community has been looking for.
We are delighted to see more research funding from the government. The $10b research funding will provide a welcome boost to the work of the University Grants Committee, the Research Grants Council and the universities.
We welcome the goal set to increase to 1.5% of GDP for expenditure on R&D within five years. We recognise this as a significant investment to the advantage of our long-term research development.
The provision of a Hostel Development Fund will not only allow us to provide more residential places to students at a faster pace, it will also allow us to explore other residential options that would bring in elements of residential education (i.e. “hall life”) and a culture of inclusiveness and diversity for a more comprehensive education for our students.
HKU President Professor Peter Mathieson said: "I warmly welcome the initiatives in the CE's policy address, especially the plans for the hostel fund and the substantial and rapid increases in research funding and support for innovation and technology. HKU looks forward to playing its part in implementation.""
