The University of Hong Kong defeated Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) by 2:0 and won the University Sports Federation Men’s Soccer Championship.
The final match was held at the Joint Sports Stadium on April 17 (Saturday). HKU President Zhang Xiang, HKU Council Member Mr Charles Li Xiaojia, Professor Samson Tse, Dean of Student Affairs, and Dr. Michael Tse, Director of the Centre for Sports and Exercise (CSE) were at the Stadium in support of the team.
“Being there today to see this historic victory and the dedication of our students as they fought for their first ever University Soccer Championships made me so proud,” said Professor Zhang.
“We will continue to look for ways to develop the values of sport into our HKU culture, because sport is one of the best ways to bring people together, provide students with life balance and most of all sport forges lasting memories”, he added.
“This win goes down in the HKU record books and it will be a lifelong memory for all the dedicated players, coaches, alumni, staff and supporters who have long been waiting for this win which the players deserve.” Dr. Michael Tse said.
The HKU team lost to the CityU team in the final match in the 2016 season. They managed to make it to the quarterfinals with two losses to PolyU in 2017 and 2018.
