HKU Organises Virtual Information Day for Undergraduate Admissions
30 Oct 2021
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) organised a Virtual Information Day (IDay) for Undergraduate Admissions today (October 30, Saturday). Admission talks were held to provide important information including admission scores for 2021 intake and the latest admission requirements and tips.
Apart from introducing important admission requirements, various industry gurus were invited to talk about the demands for talents in specific fields and the latest job trends in this year’s IDAY. Guest speakers included Mr Albert Wong, Chief Executive Officer, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation; Mr Fred Sheu, National Technology Officer of Microsoft Hong Kong and Mr Bryan Wang, Director of Marketing Science of Facebook Greater China. The industry leaders engaged in a panel discussion on the growing importance of big data and digitalisation and how the HKU programmes can cater to market demand.
Over 100 live sessions were organised, covering individual programme features and curriculum information. Students also shared with audience their experience on campus life and internship programmes.
HKU will launch seven new undergraduate programmes in the 2022-23 academic year, including five big data-oriented programmes and two professional programmes. Please refer to Appendix I for the details of the new programmes.
“HKU’s programmes are designed to keep pace with the times. Students with different ambitions can learn and master new knowledge and research trends in their respective fields. The programmes aim to equip students from multiple perspectives through learning experiences inside and outside the classroom,” said Professor Bennett Yim, Director of Undergraduate Admissions and International Student Exchange, HKU.
Professor Yim said the curriculum in HKU caters to the needs of students, citing two elite courses launched in 2021-22 as examples. The Faculty of Science’s double degree programme, 6688 Science Master Class, aims to cultivate a new generation of scientific researchers, who can translate scientific knowledge into practical applications with far-and wide-reaching impacts. The curriculum is designed for elite students who are interested in scientific research, and are taught by Science Masters who are renowned scientists in the Faculty. Students will have a chance to gain hands-on experience by participating in cutting-edge scientific research and learning through the Grand Masters in special tutorials.
The 6418 Bachelor of Nursing - Advanced Leadership Track (BNurs-ALT) is designed for high achievers, who aspire to pursue an advanced and specialised nurse practice or a nurse-physician career in the healthcare sector. After taking the 5-year BNurs curriculum, students will have the opportunity to articulate to HKU Master of Nursing (MNurs) or HKU Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) pathways, and will be able to obtain two professional degrees in six or nine years respectively.
“The first cohort of students from the Science Master Class have already been assigned Science Masters as their academic advisers, according to their research interests and aspirations. Year One students of the Advanced Leadership Track under the Bachelor of Nursing have also been assigned personal mentors to develop their professional skills, with leadership training and experiential learning opportunities,” Professor Yim added.
The University will also launch the “Be My Guests” on-campus activities in November, where different faculties will organise face-to-face talk sessions, laboratory visits and workshops to let prospective students learn more about their favourite programmes and experience the HKU campus in person.
