Professor Hongzhe SUN receives
the Royal Society of Chemistry’s 2023 Dalton Horizon Prize
14 Jun 2023
A team led by Professor Hongzhe SUN, Norman & Cecilia Yip Professor in Bioinorganic Chemistry and Chair Professor of Chemistry at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), has been elected by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)’s Dalton Prize Committee to award the 2023 Horizon Prize, for their pioneering research on the medicinal chemistry of bismuth applied to the treatment of COVID-19, and identification of target sites in SARS-CoV-2 enzymes using metallomics methods. The prize is awarded to the collaboration behind this breakthrough.
Professor Sun extends his heartfelt gratitude to RSC and the Selection Committee. ‘I am extremely delighted to be recognised by RSC. We are very proud of the results achieved by an interdisciplinary team consisting of chemists, microbiologists, pharmacologists and clinicians. It is also a reward of persistence on our original and cutting-edge research with potential to improve human health,’ said Professor Sun.
Dean of HKU Science Professor Qiang ZHOU congratulated Professor Sun on his achievements. ‘My warmest congratulations go to Professor Hongzhe Sun, for his receiving of this prestigious award for his groundbreaking research in medicinal chemistry. His team has not only advanced our understanding of the mechanisms behind drug development but has also paved the way for new treatments and therapies. His unwavering dedication to improving human health through scientific discovery is truly inspiring. This recognition is well-deserved and a testament to his outstanding contributions to the field. We are honoured to have Professor Sun as a member of our community and look forward to their continued success in the future,’ remarked Professor Zhou.
