The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has secured its highest-ever position in the 2024 Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), rising 19 places from the previous year to rank 69th globally.
HKU ranks as the 10th highest-ranking university in Asia, and continues to be the premier institution locally, maintaining its status as the only university in Hong Kong ever to rank in the top 100 of the ARWU.

The ARWU, released annually by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, evaluates over 2500 universities worldwide and publishes the top 1000 results. Since 2003, it has been ranking the world's top universities annually, using a methodology that incorporates six indicators including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, the number of Highly Cited Researchers selected by Clarivate™, the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index from the Web of Science, and per capita performance of a university.
