The University of Hong Kong (HKU) held the HKU Celebration of Sports - Meet the Top Athletes event on 19 Oct at The Henderson in celebration of the achievements of the sports scholars.
HKU Lee Shau Kee Top Athletes Scholarship awardees, Cheung Sum Yuet Cindy (Swimming); Magnus Prostur Johannsson (Athletic); Pak Hoi Man Chloe (Athletic); and Rafeek Kikabhoy (Windsurfing) shared their personal experiences, challenges overcome, and lessons learned on their journey. Their stories provided a glimpse into the dedication and resilience essential for achieving excellence in sports.
President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Xiang Zhang expressed his gratitude to the Lee Shau Kee Foundation and Henderson Land Group for their unwavering support of HKU and the “Lee Shau Kee Top Athletes Scholarship” which supports top athletes to pursue their academic aspirations as well as sports career development. Professor Zhang highlighted the enduring values of sports in a rapidly evolving world, “While AI and technology continue to shape the way we live, the essence of sports remains a vital component of human experience and creativity. Sports bring people together from diverse backgrounds and cultures, uniting us in a common passion.”
Vice Chairman of Henderson Land Group Dr Colin Lam said, “Henderson Land believes in giving young athletes every chance of realising their dreams not only on the sports field but also in the academic arena. That is why, in 2022, the Lee Shau Kee Foundation made a donation to HKU to establish the Lee Shau Kee Top Athletes Scholarship. Twenty elite students have been awarded this scholarship in the past three years. They have gone on to exceed in the classroom and at sports with some even representing Hong Kong at the Olympics.”
Generations of HKU Sports Scholars have taken the lead in bringing pride to Hong Kong and HKU. The University is committed to support outstanding sports talents for their pursuits of both sports and academic excellence.
