Professor Lam is the Chair Professor of the Department of Medicine and Chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the same department. He was medically qualified in Hong Kong, trained in gastroenterology in Edinburgh, and was research-educated in Los Angeles. He has over 450 publications in international journals, thirty-three book chapters and nine books. He is the founding Editor of the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and has served on the editorial board of 20 international journals of gastroenterology and medicine. His major research interests are in Helicobacter pylori infection, gastric cancer, peptic ulcer, non-ulcer dyspepsia and motility disorders of the gut. He is currently the President of the Asia Pacific Association of Gastroenterology.
In recognition of achievements in medicine and gastroenterology, he was awarded the Officer in the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1997. Amongst the positions held, he has been the Director of Centre of Alimentary Research & Education (CARE) since 1981 and Chairman and Founder of China Ulcer Research Group, China since 1987. He is currently the Guest Professor of Department of Medicine of Beijing Medical College, Shanghai Second Medical College, Xinjiang Medical University, Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University of Medical Sciences and Divison of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of Chinese PLA General Hospital, China.
HKU's Faculty of Medicine elects New Dean

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is pleased to announce that Professor Lam Shiu-Kum of the Department of Medicine has been elected as the Dean of Faculty of Medicine for three years from March 1, 2001.
