In order to celebrate the official inauguration of the AMEA, an Inaugural Symposium entitled “Asian Medical Education in the 21st Century” will be organized by the Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong on June 21-22, 2001 in the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine.
The Symposium, which is also one of the Faculty's programmes on celebration of the 90th anniversary of the University, will provide a forum for delegates from institutions in the Mainland and other Asian countries to share experience in medical education reform and research, as well as the teaching pedagogy development. More than 170 representatives of 44 medical schools from 12 places in Asia will attend the Symposium. Professor JA Spinks, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University, will officiate at the Inaugural Ceremony. Professor SK Lam, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, HKU, Dr Leong Che Hung, President of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, and Dr Lee Kin Hung, President of the Medical Council of Hong Kong, will also attend the Ceremony as guests of honour.

Asian Medical Education in the 21st Century Inaugural Symposium of the Asian Medical Education Association (AMEA)

The recent years have seen an increased interest in curriculum planning and rethinking of approaches to medical education in medical schools in many countries. Pressures for change have come not only from the medical profession, but also from the public. The intended result is that the doctors produced will be better equipped to meet the needs of the community which they will serve. It is against this background that the Asian Medical Education Association (AMEA) is established to strengthen and promote good pedagogy and research on medical education. The Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong is currently the Liaison Office of the AMEA.
