Dr Yang has been selected to receive this grant in synthetic organic chemistry because she has devoted most of her energy in recent years to exploring the use of triptolide, natural product isolated from the Chinese medicinal plant Thunder God Vine, which exhibits potent anti-inflammatory and anti-tumour properties.
The Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation is a non-profit corporation that administers most of the philanthropic activities of Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. The unrestricted research grants, which is one of the several programmes funded by the Foundation, gives Dr Yang the freedom to pursue any directions in which her work takes her. Dr Yang is the first female chemist to receive this award.
Dr John Scott, Executive Director of Bristol-Myers Squibb will attend the ceremony and present the award to Dr Yang. Professor Ian Davies, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, will also give a welcoming address at the occasion. Dr

Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation is to present Dr Yang Dan at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Hong Kong with an unrestricted research grant of US$300,000 at a ceremony on Friday, July 20, 2001.
