HKU's Centre of Asian Studies and The Institute of East Asian Societies and Economies of Tunghai University to organize a workshop on Stock Markets
26 Sep 2001
Both the 1997 Asian financial crisis and the current stock market fluctuations demonstrate the volatility of the stock market in the era of globalization. Yet little is understood about the relations that the stock market has to the enthusiasm and behaviour of various types of investors, to government control and policy, to the Hi-tech industries, and to the social construction of confidence or crisis. It is against this background that the Centre of Asian Studies and the Institute of East Asian Societies and Economies of Tunghai University in Taiwan are jointly organizing a workshop on “The Stock Markets in Hong Kong, Taipei and Shanghai: Current Challenges and Future Co-operation”. The workshop will be held at the University of Hong Kong — Senate Room, 10/F., Knowles Building from 9:00am to 6:00pm on Friday, 28 September 2001.
By inviting regulators, practitioners and scholars as participants, it is hoped that the workshop will achieve two objectives. First, to make some preliminary observations on the stock markets in Hong Kong, Taipei and Shanghai. The different institutional settings of the three places will render us a unique opportunity to examine the characteristics of the development of the stock markets, the investors as well as the roles of government. The second objective is to identify major issues for further research, comparative studies and future cooperation.
Places will be available on a first-come-first-served basis. For registration, please contact Ms. May Yip at (tel.) 2859 2460.
