21 Nov 2001
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is once again to participating in the Innovation Expo organised by Innovation and Technology Commission - the third in its series. It will be held from November 22 - 26, 2001 in Hall I, Phase II, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre at Wanchai. A HKU Pavilion is constructed to showcase a total of 40 research projects, 26 of them are subsidised by the Innovation Technology Fund / Industry Support Fund.
The main theme for the HKU Pavilion is "Building a Wonderful World" – to show how research outputs can increase one's quality of life. There are 4 thematic zones in the HKU Pavilion, namely “IT”, “Engineering”, “Biomedical & Health” and “Biotechnology”. Four projects have been highlighted to help demonstrate our technological innovations and research excellence to the public:
iLIGHT: Visible Light for Communications,
A Rapid Tooling Facility for Hong Kong Manufacturers,
On the Genetic Trail of the "Bird Flu" Virus, and
Conservation & Commercial Hybrid of Native Chinese Chicken.
Throughout the 5-day event, principal investigators will be on hand to explain their research. Dr Wallace B L Lim of the Department of Zoology has applied to US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a patent to cover his research which introduces novel biochemical pathways into transgenic plants so that they produce more fruits. There will also be a free tasting of “Ka Mei” chicken, the high quality commercial breed developed by Professor Daniel K O Chan of the Kadoorie Agricultural Research Centre.
As a token of appreciation, SPACE of HKU will give away 10,000 free S-MILES to visitors who collect 16 stamps from any four booths of the four zones in the HKU Pavilion.
Professor C F Lee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of HKU, will officiate at a preview of the HKU Pavilion to be held at 12:30pm on November 22, 2001 (Thursday). Members of the Press are cordially invited to attend.
