Professor Walter Mischel has been inspirational in personality research. His seminal work on the limitations of personality traits as predictors of behavior, and the importance of the situation for the expressions of personality, has challenged researchers to vigorously probe into the dynamic relation between people's behavior and the situation they are in. His research has helped researchers and interested public alike to understand the predictability and consistency of people's behavior.
In addition to being the Niven Professor of Humane Letters of Columbia University, Professor Walter Mischel's contribution to psychology has been honored by numerous prestigious awards. Currently, he holds a Merit Award from the National Institute of Mental Health which supports his research.
In this public lecture, Professor Mischel will present a theory to reconcile paradoxical findings on the invariance of personality and the variability of behavior across situations that have challenged the traditional trait paradigm in personality psychology for many decades.
Members of the press and interested parties are cordially invited to attend. For further enquiries, please contact Mr K K Chan, HKU's Department of Psychology at 2857 8244.
